With Solution Dyed Nylon (SDN), colour pigments are locked into the molecular structure of the fibre unlike normal (post dyed) fibres where the dye colour is only skin deep. The result is permanent, uniform colour saturation.

The advantages of SDN

  • Exceptional clarity and colourfastness even with prolonged exposure to light and atmospheric contaminants
  • Outstanding wear performance even when subjected to heavy traffic and harsh cleaning agents
  • Excellent batch to batch colour uniformity

Wool is considered the premium eco-friendly carpet fibre for very good reason.  Wool carpets use 100% sustainable wool and have a unique ability to breathe, keeping your home warmer and drier in winter, and cooler and drier in summer (particularly in humid climates).

Each fibre type has its own range of benefits. If the carpet is produced using a closely monitored manufacturing process (as is the case with all of our products), it will be of high quality, allowing it to be a simple question of personal preference when considering both options.

Wool typically provides a more luxurious look and feel, where Nylon provides superior resistance to fading, staining and high foot traffic.

Cut Pile

Cut Pile Illustration

A cut pile carpet generally has a more luxurious feel than other styles of carpet. Cut pile carpets can vary from a resilient hard twist (which has the equivalent of a 'perm' to hold the twist in), to a softer plush pile (where the fibres stand up straight) or a deeply sensuous shagpile. Cut pile carpets do show footprints more readily which can vacuum out.

All cut pile carpets, particularly plush pile carpets will develop lighter or darker patches over time. Known as "shading", "puddling" or "watermarking" it is caused by the permanent bending of the carpet pile fibres which then reflect the light differently. In this respect, cut pile carpets are very comparable to other natural textiles such as suede and velvet - which also show light and dark areas and are appreciated for this very quality. The extent to which shading occurs cannot be accurately predicted or prevented and is most often related to the location of use.

Shading does not affect the wear or durability of the carpet and is not recognised as a manufacturing flaw or defect. It is very important that you understand this characteristic before you buy a cut pile carpet.

Loop Pile

Level loop pile carpets can offer a classic or casual look depending on the style. Loop pile carpets are easy care, don't show footprints and are particularly suited to busy homes or those with young children.

Textured loop pile carpets have a variation in the height of the loops, providing added interest and texture on the floor. Also a great option for busy households as they don't show footprints and have excellent soil hiding properties.

Combination Cut and Loop pile

Cut and Loop Illustration

These are a clever combination of cut pile and loop pile construction - the cut pile contrasting with the loops to create a distinctive pattern which will retain its crispness on the floor. A mix of textures here creates added interest and (depending on the pattern) can range from the boldly dramatic to a classic and tailored look.

As with most smooth floor coverings, water and other liquids can make it slippery. Karndean floors are designed to be slip resistant, but it is always best to clean up any spillages straight away, and keep the floor dry.

How do I remove light scratch marks?

If Karndean Refresh has been applied after the floor was laid, you can easily eliminate light scratches by removing the Karndean Refresh using Karndean Remove, wiping off the residue with a mop and rinse thoroughly with clean water. You can then re-apply a fresh coat of Refresh.

How do I remove deep scratch marks?

On the occasion there is a particularly deep scratch, first try using their Remove and Refresh products on your floor. If this doesn't improve the appearance of the deep scratch enough, you'll find that the best option may be to replace the plank that has been damaged. The versatility of Karndean Designflooring planks allows for a no fuss replacement, and it's even easier with Karndean LooseLay.
